Congratulations! You’ve just found out you’ve made it through to the interview stage…

A job interview can be a nerve-wracking experience, and while you’re likely to start prepping for your answers, your outfit is also worth taking into consideration.

So, what should you wear? What will the interviewer think? Will you make the right impression?

Don't worry, we're here to help you ace your interview by dressing for success!

In this post, we'll provide tips for what to wear to an interview for men and women.

So whether you're interviewing for a job in a corporate setting or a more creative industry, we've got you covered.

Read on to learn how to dress appropriately and make a great impression on your interviewer!

What Clothes to Wear to an Interview for Men:

When it comes to what to wear to an interview for men, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

First and foremost, dress professionally. So that means no jeans, t-shirts, or sneakers.

Plus, be sure to wear clothes that are clean and wrinkle-free.

For a more corporate setting, a suit will work best.

But if you're not comfortable wearing a full suit, try wearing a blazer and dress pants instead.

However, if the job you're interviewing for is more creative in nature, consider dressing in business casual attire instead.

For example, pair a dress shirt with khaki pants or trousers and a blazer.

What Clothes to Wear to an Interview for Women:

The key to dressing for an interview as a woman is to dress professionally and conservatively.

And that usually means no skirts above the knee, low-cut blouses, or flashy jewelry.

That said, try wearing a pantsuit or skirt and blouse combo instead, and ensure they have been pressed well to give a good first impression.

On the other hand, if you're interviewing for a job in a more creative industry, consider dressing in business casual attire.

For example, you could wear a dress shirt with khaki pants or trousers and a blazer.

What Shoes to Wear to an Interview

When it comes to an interview outfit, shoes might be one of the most overlooked pieces.

But if you want that dream job and are willing to do whatever is necessary for success - then leave those Crocs at home!

Overall, your shoe choice will depend entirely on the type of job you’re interviewing for.

For Men:

The best interview shoes for men will generally be smart, polished shoes in either black or brown.

Some men ask whether brown shoes are appropriate to wear to an interview, mainly because of the age old saying “no brown in town”.

Whilst in some corporate offices this may still be true, in offices where the dress code is business casual, brown shoes will work just fine - especially when paired with a navy suit.

That said, lace-ups such as Oxfords or Derbys are a great shout, and are available in round or square toe.

Alternatively, if you want to be a little different, you could wear a stylish pair of Chelsea boots in leather for a classic winter look.

For Women:

Flat shoes for an interview are a great shout, especially if you’re not a heel-lover! Flats are much more comfortable to walk in, which can help to ease those pre-interview nerves.

With flats, you’ll want to choose a pair with closed toes and backs as this looks much more professional.

In the summer, pumps are a great option; these will not only look smart and classy, but help to keep your feet cool and avoid sweaty feet.

In the winter, consider a pair of flat black leather boots, which can be paired with trousers, dresses or skirts.

And no matter the season, loafers will always look great for both smart and smart casual environments.

On the other hand, if you want to strut your way into an interview with a pair of heels, then go for it!

A closed toe shoe with a heel height of 2-3 inches is an excellent choice, such as court shoes.

The Bottom Line

Dressing appropriately for an interview is essential.

What you wear can say a lot about you as a person, so it's important to choose wisely.

Be sure to dress professionally and conservatively, and to choose clothes and shoes that are clean and wrinkle-free.

All in all, a suit is always a safe choice, but if you're not comfortable wearing a full suit, try dressing in business casual attire instead.

Good luck with your interview!
