Buying a shoe shelf is not just a case of how it looks and the associated cost. (In all fairness, if you are reading this blog, you already care about more than looks and cost).

A good shoe shelf is meant to be useful for years to come. So, it is worthwhile putting an effort into looking at your purchase a bit more intricately.

Here are 3 considerations you should consider:

1. Where will Your Shoe Shelf Go?

Let’s start with something simple: where will your shoe shelf go?

Then, depending on this choice, you can have relatively high or low flexibility.

If you intend to put your shoe shelf at the doorway, you’ll need to consider how much space it can occupy without hindering movement. For quick measure, make sure that the shoe shelf will take less than a fourth of the space in the doorway.

In addition, make sure that your choice isn’t too tall. Generally, around or under 80 cm (around 30 inches) will be fine, in terms of safety. Walking into a house and having shoes above your head is just a no go.

Here, in terms of colour of the shoe shelf, given that it might be the first thing noticed by your guests, make sure that it matches or, at least, complements the colours around, e.g. the wall and the floor. We suggest looking at a colour wheel to make this decision.

You should make similar considerations if you intend to put the shoe shelf in a room.

However, if you intend to put the shoe shelf in a closet, you can have a little more freedom. Chances are that not many people will be coming into your closet. So, you have a little more option, and push for practicality, as you may feel fit.

2. Buy for Growth

A lot of the time, we end up buying for the need at a time. This means that you have counted the number of shoes in the house and have thought of buying a shoe shelf that can accommodate them all.

But, if my experience tells me anything, it’s that the number of shoes always increases over time until you do a clearing.

In all fairness, men are not much better either these days and, at this point, I have shoes for almost every occasion. (Perks of having a shoes business).

So, buy for the future. I would say a 25% margin of growth is a good way to go.

3. Nail it Down

A shoe shelf can get heavy fast.

So, for instance, if you bought a 5 kg shoe shelf and put 20 pairs on it, the weight is now almost double.

Here, even if you are not worried about it coming down on anyone, 10 kg will do enough damage to any floor, especially if it gets dragged along the floor on impact.

Therefore, make sure that the shoe shelf does not move, willingly, once you have bought it.
