Before you say, “socks are no big deal”, stop and think again!

Socks are just as important as choosing which jacket to wear. Their style, colour, length and material matters.

In fact, it matters a lot and if you’re not choosing the right pair in the right way, you could be drawing attention to your feet for the wrong reasons.

Now, there are no specific rules when it comes to fashion - you should wear whatever you feel most confident and comfortable in - but you should try and match socks depending on your activity and setting.

With that in mind, here are 6 different types of socks and how you should wear them.

1. Invisible Socks

Invisible socks are thin and act as a protective layer between your foot and the shoe.

Generally, these are perfect for low cut shoes, such as loafers or ballet flats - they give the illusion of not wearing any socks without causing any damage to your feet.

So, if you want your shoes to take the spotlight rather than wearing novelty socks, just reach for a pair of invisible socks. Women tend to wear them with flats in business settings whereas men would wear them for more informal events.

2. Ankle Socks

Sometimes known as mini crew socks, the ankle sock sits about an inch above the ankle.

Usually, these are worn for sport activities, like tennis or running, which is why so many sports brands have made them with performance fabrics that absorb moisture.

Nonetheless, ankle socks are great for everyday wear and if you want something a bit for fun, you can choose snazzy prints that can help brighten anyone’s day!

3. Crew Length Socks

Crew length socks are a classic that everybody should have in their wardrobe.

This style sits just below the middle of the calf and is popular by men and women alike.

Whether you’re off for a hike or going to an interview, there’s a crew length sock out there to suit every need; they’re 6 - 8 inches long and give excellent protection and coverage.

4. Mid Calf Socks

Mid calf socks are sometimes referred to as “trouser socks” for both men and women, and run up to your calf muscles.

And they are made to keep your feet warm inside boots, trainers or even loafers whilst still maintaining a dressy appearance.

Often, these socks are considered a formal sock choice and in the past they were incredibly popular.

More recently, they’ve become available in a large range of patterns and fabrics tailored for any occasion and season. For instance, wool is popular in winter months whilst thinner fabrics are preferred when it’s warmer, but they’re suitable for everyday office attire.

5. Knee High Socks

Knee high socks tend to be more popular amongst women. Not only are they warm, they’re super cute!

As the name suggests, these socks go right to the knee and are perfect for wearing with tall boots and a pair of shorts.

Of course, men can wear knee high socks too. Just think of sports, where this stock style is worn in activities like football, rugby, hockey etc.

Not to mention compression socks! OK they’re not the most stylish, but they do keep fatigue at bay.

6. Over the Knee Socks

Similar to knee high, these too are popular amongst women. Obviously, these socks go over the knee and they look great in the colder months.

In autumn or winter, wooly over-the-knee socks are super cute and look perfect with a pair of boots, knitted dress and a long line coat.

Typically, Scottish men and women wear thigh high socks with their knee length skirts.

The Takeaway

The takeaway here is that socks are not just to keep your feet warm.

Yes, that helps, but they’re so much more and they’re just as important as any other part of an outfit. They’re a fashion accessory, a conversation starter and a great way to express your personality!
