One fact many don't realise is that, humans spend a vast amount of time on feet bearing weight.

Therefore, feet have to be looked after well by wearing comfortable and healthy footwear.

Wearing healthy footwear eliminates foot exhaustion and foot complications from occurring. But, wearing improper shoes could lead to having toe deformities, feeling discomfort, pain, bruises, corns and callus and many more other health conditions.

You could also have foot or ankle injuries due to wearing unhealthy shoes.

Healthy shoes do not have to be boring, it could still be fashion friendly. Also, you could make dress-shoes or occasion-wear shoes healthy too.

For instance, there is a misconception that all the trainers are healthy, but they all are not. Instead, you need to make sure that your sports shoes are healthy.

Healthy shoes are usually modest, lightweight, and flat from toe to heel. In addition, these shoes should be able to provide stability and arch support.

Apart from this, we have to make sure that shoes do not add pressure or pinch while walking.

Here are 5 things you should consider when choosing healthy footwear.

1. Breathable Top Layer

There are different materials used in shoes ranging from leather to synthetic mesh or even recycled plastic.

But, no matter what material you buy, you have to make sure that it is soft, could let moisture out and air in; so that feet could breath and keep dry.

2. Insoles & Arch Support

Improper/uncomfortable insoles could cause flat feet and cause other issues such as ankle pain and etc.

So, if it does not have proper padded insoles, check if it could be removed and you could add customised insoles or orthotics in the shoes.

Keep in mind: Shoes with improper arch support could add stress and strain to lower legs which could cause pain and other long term complications.

3. Contoured Footbed and Fastening

Contoured Footbed feature takes the same shape of the foot as of the shoe wearer.

In this instance, the shoe should hold and have a grip on the foot, not let it slip away. Therefore, It is always best to have lace, buckle or close fastening to adjust the shoes.

4. Firm Heel And Sole

A firm heel should be placed in shoes to maintain proper heel position and maintain stability.

Here, the recommended height for a healthy heel is 25 to 30mm.

Along with the heels, the sole of the shoe should have a stable grip and have shock absorption.

5. Toe Comfort

The toe front should be flexible, comfortable and wide for the toes to wiggle and prevent overlapping toes which could cause hammer toes and other issues.

In shoes, It is advised to have a minimum of 6mm length, ahead of the big toe and wide around the toe end and not around the toe ball.

Even though the sole of the shoe should be flexible, it should be able to return to its previous shape.
