A bunion is a bone deformity that forms on the joint just below the big toe.
And, it occurs when the front part of your foot moves out of place - the big toe gets pulled towards the other toes and forces the joint to stick out.
Consequently, wearing tight and narrow shoes can be the cause of bunions or make them worse.
Unfortunately, bunions can not only cause pain, but inflammation and structural changes too.
In severe circumstances, you may need to undergo surgery to have them removed.
However, there’s a possibility it can grow back and ultimately, your feet would still be shaped differently.
With that in mind, you should ease the pain by wearing comfortable, wide fit shoes with enough space for your toes.
Physical Signs
If you think you may be developing a bunion, check for these primary physical signs:
- Big toe starting to point towards other toes
- Swollen, bony lump on the outside of the foot
- Thick hardened skin beneath the big toe
Over time, you may find significant structural changes, which can make it difficult to find comfortable, well-fitted shoes.
3 Complications of Bunions
1. Bursitis
Bursitis is when the bursae becomes inflamed; these are the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones and muscles in your joints.
Consequently, as the bunion gets bigger, the bursae swells, whis can cause tissue damage and arthritis.
2. Metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia is used to describe a group of conditions that cause pain and discomfort to your feet.
With this complication, you may experience symptoms such as burning sensations in the balls of your feet, sharp pains in your toes or numbness.
3. Hammertoe
Hammer toe is a deformity causing your toe to curl downwards rather than pointing straight.
On the bright side, you can correct a mild hammer toe by wearing appropriate footwear.
Closing Thoughts
Bunions cause pain and it is inefficient to remove them.
Therefore, take action early on to prevent bunion formations in the future.
You should do this by investing in properly fitted shoes that accommodate your feet, without tightening or adding pressure.
