There’s nothing worse than getting rid of shoes you’re not quite ready to yet, simply because of lack of care.
Unfortunately, without good upkeep, shoes get ruined quickly and will not see another season.
Don’t worry, here are 4 tips on how you can properly take care of your favourite pair of shoes.
1. Protective Sprays
Prevention is always better than trying to resolve an issue later.
So, before you wear your new shoes outside it’s a good idea to use a waterproof spray to protect them from getting ruined - especially by bad weather.
For example, use an impregnation spray for synthetic leather shoes to not only seal the seams, but create a protective layer against dust and dirt.
2. Warm Water and Handsoap
Synthetic leather footwear can be cleaned using warm water and mild hand soap.
Simply, mix the two together and apply gently onto the shoes using a soft cloth; rubbing away any fresh dirt specs.
3. Clean Laces Separately
If your shoes are dirty, chances are your laces are too.
To clean them, place the laces into a warm soapy bowl of water for about an hour then let them air dry.
4. Avoid Direct Heat and Sunlight
Once you have cleaned your shoes, it’s important not to place them too closely near a heat source or direct sunlight.
The two reasons for this is:
- UV rays can break down the plastic used to create the synthetic leather and therefore begin to crack.
- Direct heat can cause the synthetic leather to melt and damage your shoes beyond repair.
Instead, be patient and air dry them in a cool place.
5. White Vinegar
Let’s say you have tougher stains and warm soapy water just is not cutting it, you could try using distilled white vinegar.
To try, mix equal parts water and vinegar, then use a clean cloth to blot the stain with the solution.
Remember, always try a test patch first!
Finishing Thoughts
With this in mind, it’s clear you need to be gentle with synthetic leather.
Consequently, over cleaning with strong solutions will eventually cause synthetic leather to become damaged, cracked and lose its colour.
Should you find your shoes are dirty, be gentle and let them dry naturally.
