When we ask for a dress code for a particular event, we hear the term “just dress smart casual” thrown around a lot.

But, what does smart casual even mean?

If you’re left feeling confused, don’t worry, you’re not the only one.

A merge of two opposites, smart casual is a grey area and can be quite tricky to pull off and often can go horribly wrong.

However, in wake of the recent pandemic and over a year of home-based working and living, the smart casual dress code has now more than ever, been one dress code important to master.

Arguably, smart casual pins down to one common theme - you feel comfortable and at ease but still elegant enough if you need to pop into the office or other events.

To avoid any fashion faux pas, we discuss what smart casual is and outfit options for both men and women.

What is Smart Casual?

The smart casual dress code usually gives a balance between casual and formal wear.

In particular, outfits that are the perfect match for social occasions but still have a professional flare - think, after work drinks or a networking social.

Keep in mind though, the meaning behind smart casual shifts depending on the context, so the first place to start is understanding the occasion or event you’ll be attending.

Also, going too smart is always a better idea than going too casual - there’s no such thing as being overdressed.

If you’re still not quite sure, there are three basic rules to keep in mind:

  1. Make sure your clothes are fitted properly, unless oversized or slim fitting is the style.
  2. Muted colours, like black, brown or navy will naturally look smarter
  3. Only stick to one sportswear item, such as trainers, a polo shirt or t-shirt.

Smart Casual for Men

The good thing about smart casual, is that you have more flexibility when it comes to choosing your shoes - you’re not restricted to a classic pair of Oxfords which look great with suits.

Ultimately, what you’re trying to achieve is a polished casual look and so your best bet would be a pair of loafers or even chelsea boots.

As opposed to leather, opt for suede materials and in the summer months, don’t be afraid to play around with different colours rather than sticking with just black or brown.

Let’s say you’re wearing a pair of smart chinos with a t-shirt, loafers will complete the outfit effortlessly.

Or, if you want to wear jeans (yes, they work for smart casual), pair with a crew neck t-shirt, add a blazer and finish with your boots.

Speaking of blazers, we don’t mean taking it from your 3 piece suit - rather, opt for those that are lightweight and have a more relaxed feel.

Lastly, a quality pair of leather trainers will pass for the smart casual attire.

In terms of outfits, try a pair of smart jeans with a button down shirt, roll the sleeves and add your trainers - you can’t go wrong with a classic white pair.

Smart Casual for Women

Like men, loafers, boots or trainers will work for a smart casual dress code for women.

Whether you’re wearing jeans, leggings, trousers or a skirt, loafers are the ultimate versatile pair that work with both smart wear, casual wear and therefore smart casual wear!

Consider wearing a pair of slim jeans, a plain blouse with loafers and if you really want to go the extra mile, finish with a relaxed blazer.

However, you don’t have to wear jeans if you’re not feeling them - what about a jumpsuit?

One piece outfits, like jumpsuits, help you achieve a relaxed and refined balance and depending on the style, can be worn with any footwear.

Furthermore, white trainers are a trend that has been here for a while and is not going anywhere anytime soon; pair with wide leg trousers and a top of your choice for a smart but laid back impression.

Final Thoughts

Always keep in mind, smart casual is all about balance.

Although, don’t wear what you would to work as this is your opportunity to ditch the office wear but don’t wear what you wouldn’t wear to work either - that sequined top you collected on a bar crawl will not be suitable!

All in all, don’t feel overwhelmed by “rules” and stick with your true style - just avoid black-tie or cocktail attire and make of it as you wish.
