Tibialis Posterior is a muscle in the lower leg, which helps with foot movement and prevents from rolling over.

And, when this muscle swells or stretches, it is called Tibialis Posterior Tendon Dysfunction (TPTD).

In other words, you have flat feet.

Did you know, one of the main causes of TPTD is due to added weight on the foot, which can lead to having injuries, fractures or sprains

Some symptoms include pain, burning sensations, complications while walking and difficulty in raising the heel.

With this in mind, TPTD should be treated early - if not it could lead to chronic disorders.

Here are 6 ways you can treat TPTD.

1. RICE method

Simply, rest well, apply ice, wear compression socks or apply a compression bandage and lastly, elevate the foot.

Doing so will reduce inflammation and you should repeat until you see a difference in swelling.

2. Pain relief

In instances when you feel pain, you can take anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen to help relieve pain.

3. Foot Support

With TPTD, you want to support your arches as much as possible.

So, you should buy custom orthotic devices which help to support the foot’s posture.

Lastly, ankle supports would reduce the stress applied on the foot muscles and overall minimise swelling and pain.

4. Footwear

It’s important to wear properly fitted shoes that support the foot and prevent the arch from collapsing.

Moreover, you’ll need shoes with a strong supportive heel to hold the foot in place, a wide toe box and a well cushioned support under the forefoot.

5. Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy and exercise is important to strengthen the tendon at the bottom of your foot.

Doing so, helps to stretch and strengthen the muscles and ultimately, reduce the pain.

6. Surgery

Surgery is the last resort option to reconstruct your feet.

However, it is controversial, so some surgeons recommend reducing inflammation through a procedure called debridement.

Finishing Thoughts

Often, people ignore their symptoms and experience discomfort and unstable ankles.

For this reason, you should modify your footwear and consider the above to ensure you are controlling your symptoms and prevent complications in the future.
