To provide more context, the fifth metatarsal is the foot bone that connects the ankle and the small toe. From a functionalist perspective, this bone helps in balancing while standing and walking (longest bone in the foot).
Iselin Disease Among Kids
Iselin Disease is diagnosed in kids between the age of 9-14 years old, especially in children who are more active in sports.
This is because the growth plate which is made out of cartilages is softer in kids compared to the mature bones in adults. Hence, they are more prone to irritate kids compared to adults.
However, when the growth plate integrates around the age of 14, the pain disappears eventually.
As this illness grows out, you do not require surgery. However, you will need to take some steps to reduce the discomfort.
For instance, to ease the pain, you should rest, massage, apply ice, stretch the muscles, warm up before exercise and wear comfortable shoes.
Inflexible calf or muscle increases the chance of getting iselin disease, as the pressure is higher when the muscles are tight.
Similarly, having an irregular foot posture or inappropriate shoes could be a catalyst for the Iselin disease too. So, make sure that you work on the flexibility of your muscles and work on your posture.
Further, when the pain arises, do not continue the activity through the pain. Always rest well and wait for the pain to go away before restarting the activity.
In particular, if you work through the pain, it will take longer for it to heal so be aware and take precautions.
