Running shoes are an important investment.
Because, inappropriate shoes can lead to foot and ankle damage, which let’s face it - no one wants!
By taking proper care of your running shoes, you can actually make them last longer and get extra miles from them.
For this reason, it’s important you follow the below steps so that you’re not constantly purchasing new running shoes, maintain the pairs you have and enjoy them for a long time.
Here are 5 ways to take care of your running shoes properly.
1. Only Wear For Running
A golden rule is: only wear running shoes for running.
Even though they can be super comfortable, wearing them for anything else means you are wearing out the cushioning.
Consequently, when you go for your run, you may feel that your running shoes are losing their bounce.
In other words, that extra daily wear can limit the life of your shoes, meaning you will have to invest in new pairs more often.
2. Take Them Off Properly
It’s important to unlace your shoes properly to take them off, rather than just using your foot to kick them off.
Think about it - it doesn’t take long does it?
And, using the shoelaces (what they’re there for), means you’re not crushing the heel cup and ultimately keeping their support - otherwise they can get overstretched.
3. Let Them Rest
Between each run, it’s a good idea to let your running shoes rest for 48 hours before wearing them again.
Because, within that time the foam will de-compress - wearing them constantly will lose its comfort.
And, by allowing your shoes to rest, it can actually increase the lifespan of your running shoes by an extra 100 miles!
With this in mind, it’s a good idea to buy two pairs that you can wear on rotation.
4. Keep Them Clean
After every run, give your shoes a quick wipe down to remove any specs of dirt.
In addition, check the soles for any stones that may have gotten caught in the treads.
And, if that doesn’t cut it - hand wash them with warm soapy water and a delicate sponge; don’t just whack them in the washing machine.
However, it’s not just because of dirt you want to clean them - sweat can affect the condition of your running shoes and can become a breeding ground for mould and bacteria.
5. Air Dry
Remember, do not put your running shoes in the dryer.
Instead, let them air dry by placing them under the radiator or on a shoe rack.
Doing so, will allow your shoes to dry without causing any damage to the material and soles of your running shoes.
For quicker results, remove the insoles and stuff newspaper tightly into the toebox - you’ll see after 10 minutes the paper will have soaked up a lot.
Closing Remarks
Ultimately, even by taking care of your running shoes properly, there will eventually be a time when they need replacing (typically about 400 miles).
However, by following these steps above, you can extend how long they last for.
At the end of the day, your overall comfort is especially important when running, so if they don’t feel right, it’s probably time to replace.
