Socks and shoes.

They go together like peas and carrots, Batman and Robin, cookies and milk.

Okay, maybe not THAT well, but the point is that they are a classic pair.

We pay so little attention to the socks we wear yet they add an extra layer of warmth and comfort to shoes.

But they're also a small detail that can tie your outfit all together - or be an unwanted distraction!

And even though it might be trendy to rock a full piece suit without socks, walking around all day in canvas or leather shoes without any type of foot protection is a bad idea.

You will undoubtedly have stinky, sweaty feet by the end of the day when you take your shoes off, which is enough to gross anyone out.

That said, here are 4 types of shoes you must wear with socks.

1. Oxford

The most formal of the dress shoes, Oxfords are characterised by their closed lacing system and are typically made from leather with thin, non-rubber soles.

Oxfords commonly feature a cap-toe embellishment, but keep in mind that the sleeker the shoe, the more formal it is.

Dress shoes are not made to be worn with socks - it just won't look right.

And because Oxfords are leather lined shoes, they'll make your feet sweat a lot, and wearing socks will help wick away excess moisture.

2. Brogues

Brogues are a type of Oxford, but they differ in that they have decorative perforations on the toe cap and vamp.

They come in both formal and casual styles and can be made from either leather or canvas. Brogues scream classic style, so yes, you need to wear them with socks.

The key to wearing socks with brogues is to choose a pair that complements the shoe's design.

For example, if you're wearing a pair of black brogues, you might want to wear a pair of black dress socks with them - or match the colour of your socks to your tie and pocket square.

3. Monks

Like a loafer, monk strap shoes don’t have laces, but they aren’t just slip-ons.

Instead, the upper portion of the shoe is sealed with a leather strap and metal buckle, and different versions with one, two, or even three straps are available.

Monks are ideal for those gents who want to stand out in a crowd by showing off their distinct tastes.

Always wear socks if you'll be in a more formal environment, such as at work or meeting with clients or attending a gala event.

If you're wearing black monk straps, stick with black socks; if they're brown and oxblood shoes, wear charcoal or grey socks.

4. Chelsea Boots

Chelsea boots are sleek and suave, yet smart and casual all at the same time.

But as your feet contain more sweat glands than any other part of the body, and in boots they are completely covered, you will absolutely want to wear socks otherwise you'll create the perfect breeding ground for bacteria inside your shoes - and no one wants any nasty infections.

Wearing a high-quality pair of socks with Chelsea boots will keep your feet comfortable, dry, and healthy.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

With business casual becoming increasingly popular, the sockless look has gradually invaded offices across the country.

But you don't have to actually go barefoot in dress shoes. Instead of risking infections like Athlete's foot, you can wear no-show socks that are specifically designed to be worn with dress shoes, and are made from soft, breathable materials that will keep your feet dry.
