How many times have you sat down in frustration in front of your wardrobe to get ready to go to work, out for dinner with friends or for a date; and yelled “I have nothing to wear!”
Yet, there is nothing but a sea of clothes staring back at you?
Here, it’s probably safe to say, more often than not, this is quite the opposite.
You have clothes upon clothes but you can’t style them; you are no longer feeling a particular fashion trend; or your sense of style has completely changed. At this point, it's safe to say it’s time to build a new wardrobe.
If you are not sure where or how to begin, don’t worry: It’s not as daunting as you may think. And hopefully, these tips will help you build a wardrobe that will last.
1. Have A Clear Out
First things first: Declutter!
Take everything out of your wardrobe and empty it out on your bed. (The floor also works).
Now that you have all your clothes scattered in front of you, you can begin to group these together, item by item, and begin to decide what you are keeping and what needs to go.
Doing so, you may be surprised with what you can find – a bunch of old clothes buried at the back of your wardrobe, that you forgot you even had, because you promised you would get the sewing kit out and fix them yourself.
Let’s face it – you haven’t done this and you probably never will – get rid!
2. Focus on Personal Style over Fashion Trends
It can become overwhelming to decide what style works for you.
But, it’s important to keep in mind that fashion trends come and go, however personal style is forever.
In short, always stay true to yourself and focus on wearing things you truly love.
So, do not buy clothes that you know you won’t wear or you’ll be back to square one, with a wardrobe that’s even more cluttered than you started with.
Instead, shop for pieces that can easily interchange with other items in your wardrobe.
Also, it’s important to focus on quality. You are better off spending a little extra on a good quality t-shirt that will last, rather than spending less and having to replace regularly.
3. Organise, Organise and Organise!
When you are organising your clothes, it’s a good idea to organise into sections.
For instance, if you have jeans in different colours, hang these in order.
Start with the black pair; then the grey and navy; then light blue to white.
By coordinating your clothes, you will create a colour palette for your wardrobe, making it easier to pair all your clothes into matching outfits.
Remember: Always carry your personal style and comfort when beginning to build your new wardrobe. Do not cave in to the pressures of fashion trends and concentrate on clothes that work for you; that make you feel good and express yourself!
